Geometry

This was done for Geometry class. Not a good photo as I had to take it through glass. We had to take a painting with clear perspective and remake it, shifting its space in some way. I chose this Vermeer and painted it from a 90 degree viewpoint.

Calendar

These are three yet unretouched versions of pages from a so-called calendar that we had to make last year (at school). All we had to do was make abstract representations of the twelve months. Actually I scanned these montages that I made from pages of an old stock photography catalog called Taxi (I think it's from Getty Images). As I told before I somehow love paper montage even though it might look somewhat childish, amateurish or simply old-fashioned. Once scanned and printed, they look more polished than viewed in reality. The above representations are January, February and October, respectively. In October 1956 we had a revolution here in Hungary, that's why I didn't make this month into a simple Autumn scene but made it a bit more stressful and more warlike. Otherwise I simply made compositions in color and line (the edges) that made me feel the flair of the respective months.

Spoon III

After the marks we had to make illustrations about the chosen object.

Spoon II

After having made the realistic drawing we had to abstract the image and create logos or marks out of it.

Spoon I

Again, a school assignment: Everybody had to choose some object for him/herself and make a realistic drawing or painting of it. This one was executed in acrylics.

Apologies

Sorry for not posting for such a long time. Besides having a lot to do, lately I simply didn't have access to my blog. But now I'm back and will start posting again.

screen buttons

Some web buttons I made as a school assignment. And you can also see the buttons in the making. I created them first in Illustrator from scanned sketches. Then I pixelated them in Photoshop and gave them a sublte 3D look.

Romeo, Romeo, Wherefore art Thou Romeo

Poster design for Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet. This again was a school assignment. I somehow wanted to convey the contradiction of this film. Type treatment would still need some polishing.

Croquis

Two croquis from school. Acrylic with pastel on cardboard.

Inspiration: Spot color and B/W photos

Another nice layout by Le Corbusier. Simple, bold, lovely.
I gotta tell though that I've got a love-and-hate relationship with modernism. They taught (as far as I know) that only what's functional can be beautiful, and that the curves, leaves and other decorative shapes of former times were not functional and thus were to be avoided in favor of straight lines, squares and angular shapes. This principle is not true. Functionality and beauty are not synonymous. Function and beauty CAN and SHOULD walk hand in hand but there's no such relationship between the two. A functional thing might just as well be beautiful as disgusting. And a thing that has no function might as well be beautiful as ugly. A beautiful thing that cannot be used although it should, is no good. A beautiful type that cannot be read although it should, is no use. What I think is that Modernism lay down such principles because they wanted so much to break with the past. I don't think they always lived what they preached.
So all in all, I hate Modernism, and I love it.

Inspiration: A square format and paper montage means ne plus ultra to me

A quick study

A quick study that I made at school.

horse logos

And these are the logos I made for the horse logo assignment. I quite like them.

I like taking something and refining its lines over and over till it looks the way I like it. Many times I make something that I think looks nice, but when I open it next time I have to realize that it still needs refining, so I would refine it.

school homework

These are some sketches I made for a school assignment. The assignment was to make a horse logo.

Wednesday 8 August 2007

so, looks like this is my first entry.
I'm planning to make a blog about myself (what a surprise!) and about what I do.
And also about things that other people do that make me feel good.
I chose English as my blogging tongue, 'cause I like reading in English and I'd like to practice this wonderful language when I read my blog. English is a second (actually, fourth) language to me. I spent two whole days in England, and never been to the US. So excuse me the mistakes I'm going to make.
That's it for today.
Have fun, and wait patiently till I come back with my posts.
